Squashed Head Inverse Panorama Portrait Photography, Making 3D Flat

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

As a photographer I love to push the boundaries, try out new things and go against the grain of trends. Everywhere you look at the moment it is 3D this and 3D that. Not for me. I’ve been doing some experimental photography with inverse panoramas. That’s taking a 3D object like a sphere, and photographing the whole thing so it can appear on a flat page in it’s entirety.

The technique itself has been around for many years as slit-scan photography but I am trying some digital techniques to produce the effect. Here’s an almost 360 degree view of a model’s head in one image.

Bigger and Better Things. New Wedding Photography Studio for Byron Bay, Lismore and Ballina

Friday, April 16th, 2010

I am about to shake things up with a move to a bigger and better studio space. I’ll have a dedicated meeting area for talking to brides and grooms of the Northern Rivers about their wedding photography. I’ll also be able to comfortably meet with people from Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore to talk about their portrait photography needs. That means all the messy parts of my studio where I shoot stock photos will be kept hidden away.

So where will this mystery wedding photography studio be located? Don’t tell anyone just yet because I haven’t got all the t’s crossed and i’s dotted but I am not going too far. In fact, it’s just next door to my existing studio.

Check out more of my wedding photography at www.davidfreund.com.au.

Christmas Family Portraits Tips

Friday, November 27th, 2009

I’ve got a tip for you. If you want a photo of your family to include with Christmas cards etc but don’t want to hire a professional photographer here’s some tips:

  • Get a tripod and your camera instruction book – learn how to use the self timer feature
  • Make sure the batteries are charged (I know, it’s a given but you’d be surprised …)
  • Choose your location. A brightly lit spot, out of direct sunlight with an uncomplicated background works best. Like outdoors under a big shady tree. Alternatively open all the curtains and all pile onto the couch. I love the look of a family photo on a completely overloaded couch.
  • Clean up. You might be so used to the ‘untidy corner’ of your yard or loungeroom that you don’t see it anymore, but it will be blindingly obvious in a photo
  • Wear simple clothes without bold patterns
  • Relax. Have fun. If it helps the kids to relax by having a toy in the photo, then let them. It shows what they like and that’s part of their personality
  • And the most important bit – Take the photos this weekend or you are going to run out of time.
