The Importance of Having Back Up Gear

One of the arguements against using a professional photographer is to save money and use a talented friend or family member to shoot wedding photos. Ignoring the fact that wedding photography is a highly skilled profession and one that offers no room for error – you can’t go back and do it again if the photos are not up to scratch – what if the camera weilded by the keen amature happens to break?

I shot a great wedding yesterday and had to deal with a massive gear failure. Without going into details, while shooting a family group on the beach at Ballina, a critical part of the inside of one of my cameras simply and suddenly broke. What happens now?

In my case it was problem solved in about 10 seconds. I simply pulled a backup camera body out of my bag, swapped the lenses and kept going. Simple.

Reception was at the stunning and exceptional Figtree Restaurant at Ewingsdale near Byron Bay.
